Subsidy-free renewables: have we reached the tipping point?

Sun 12 Aug 2018

Mazars and Eversheds Sutherland jointly hosted a panel event attended by nearly 100 industry participants focusing on the viability of subsidy-free renewables in the UK.

Welcoming experts from across the sector, our panel discussed the major topics in the industry, and addressed questions from the audience.

The main outcomes of the discussion were that:

  • The economics of subsidy-free projects are not far off being viable, but measures to help mitigate downside risk could have an enormous impact
  • There is a significant pipeline of new greenfield projects that could come through
  • Corporate Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs) and batteries are unlikely to be a significant source of growth

The panel, which was chaired by Ben Morris, Partner at Mazars, comprised:

  • Stephen Hill – Corporate Partner, Eversheds Sutherland
  • Kin Tang – Structured Finance Director, Lightsource BP
  • Irena Karasamani – Associate Director, Mazars
  • Phil Grant – Partner, Baringa

We have produced a detailed review of subsidy-free renewables in the UK, including further details on our panel discussion.
