The continuing non-dom story

The continuing non-dom story

We said yesterday that Labour was proposing the effective abolition of non-dom status should it form the next government and said that the position of so called ‘hereditary non-doms’ was particularly hard to justify.

Whilst the Labour proposals attracted the expected criticism from the government in the context of the election it was interesting that the Chancellors aides were reported in the FT today as saying that ‘if the Conservatives won the election they were likely to scrap the rule which allowed non-dom status to be transferred from generation to generation’.

So even in the heat of the election there seems to be a consensus around some significant changes to non-dom tax privileges whoever is returned to government.
