Auto-enrolment clock is ticking
Wed 09 Jul 2014
Every employer must automatically enrol workers into a workplace pension scheme who:
- are not already in one
- are aged between 22 and State Pension age
- earn more than £10,000 a year
- work in the UK
The Pensions Regulator has now started contacting small and micro-sized employers (those with less than 50 employees).
The regulator’s message is twofold:
- warning them they have only twelve months until ‘staging’; and
- explaining a change in terminology.
Your staging date is when your automatic enrolment duties come into force and is based on the total number of people in your PAYE scheme.
Beat the clock
Twelve months to prepare may seem generous but experience has shown that this is no more than a realistic timeframe and almost every case taken through the process has taken longer than expected.
Ringing the change from ‘registration’ to ‘declaration of compliance’
The Regulator is anxious to stress the importance of the legal duty to register and has said that ‘declaration of compliance’ is a term that “resonates more strongly with smaller businesses” than ‘registration’.
